Опис

An ancient crossroads between East and West and Bulgaria's second-largest city, Plovdiv is one of its most attractive and vibrant centers, situated in the Upper Thracian valley, along the two banks of Maritza, scattered upon six unique hills. Plovdiv has preserved unique treasures from its 24 centuries history. Evmolpia - the city of the ancient Thracians, Philippopolis (372 B.C.) - the city of Philip II Macedonian, the Roman Trimontium - the city on three hills, and Old Plovdiv - a picturesque architectural National Revival period ensemble fashioned by the generous talent, heart and mind of the Bulgarian masters.

Program:

09.00 h – Pick up from the hotel by your guide. Transportation by deluxe A/C vehicle to Plovdiv.
11.00 h – Arrival in Plovdiv. Sightseeing tour of the Old Quarter:
You will visit the remains of the city's ancient buildings - the city forum, the stadium, the amphitheatre of Philip II of Macedon, basilicas, thermal baths, houses and administrative buildings, which mostly fragments remain today: columns, capitals, friezes, mosaics, bas-reliefs and street pavements.
Inside visit the 2nd century Roman Amphitheatre, seating 3,000, which has been completely restored and performances are again presented here.
With multi-colored facades, yoke-shaped bay-windows and slender pediments, abundant decoration and lavish furnishings, softly colored silhouettes and carved ceilings, Plovdiv's two - and three-storey houses resemble minor palaces. You will visit inside the Koyumdjioglou House (1846-48), which today's Ethnographic Museum and will take a look at the Georgiadi House (1846-48), the Balabanov House and the Alphonse de Lamartine museum-house (1830) where the French poet lived for a few months.

During the National Revival period were built many churches in prominent places: the three nave basilicas churches St. Nedelya and St. Dimiter (1831), St. Constantine and Helena Church (1832), which you will visit inside and the St. Marina main metropolitan church (1853-54).
But Plovdiv isn't merely a parade of antiquities: the city's arts festivals and trade fairs rival Sofia's in number, and its restaurants and hotels compare favorably with those of the capital.

13.00 h - Optional lunch in the famous Alafrangite restaurant, where you will discover the delightful Bulgarian cuisine in a last century house-restaurant.

14.30 h - Afternoon visit the 11th century Bachkovo monastery nestled amidst the slopes of Rhodope Mountains, on the right bank of Chaia river.
The “Assumption” Bachkovo monastery is the second large monastery in Bulgaria. It is an important monument of Christian architecture and one of the largest and oldest Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Europe.
The monastery is known and appreciated for the unique combination of Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian culture, united by the common faith. The wall paintings in the refectory date back from 1643 and they are of great art value. There are stages of “the Doomsday”, figures of holly monks, stages from the Orthodox Church history and many other mural paintings. The icon of Virgin Mary is said that is miraculous. 103 manuscripts and 252 old printed books were found in the monastery in the beginning of 20 century and were called “a real literature depository”. The library preserves many valuable incunabula and old manuscripts. Its most remarkable feature, however, are the paintings that are seen everywhere - in the church and ossuary, where the figure of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander is discernible among the 11th and 14th century murals, in the refectory (1601), in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin main church (1604), and in the Holy Trinity and St. Nicholas church (1840), which contain some of the first murals painted by the celebrated National Revival artist Zahari Zograph.

16.00 h – Departure back to Sofia.
18.00 h – Drop off in your hotel.
